The most common decorating mistake we see isn't color or pattern — it's a rug one size too small, floating in the middle of the room like an island. Here's what our designers actually specify.
Living rooms
An 8' x 10' fits most living rooms: front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, 12–18 inches of floor showing at the walls. Larger open plans want a 9' x 12' or 10' x 14' so the whole seating group sits fully on the rug.
Bedrooms
Under a queen, an 8' x 10' placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed gives you soft landings on three sides. A king wants a 9' x 12'. Runners along each side work beautifully in narrow rooms.
Dining rooms
The rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides, so chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out. For most tables that means a 9' x 12'.
Entries and halls
A 2'6" x 8' runner suits most hallways; leave a few inches of floor visible on each side. In an entry, a 4' x 6' or a round rug softens the first step inside.
