The most common mistake we see in client homes isn't color or style — it's a rug that's one size too small. A too-small rug makes furniture look like it's floating and the room feel smaller than it is. Here's the rule we use in every room we build, and it takes thirty seconds.
The rule
The front legs of every seating piece should sit on the rug. Not near it — on it. When the rug connects the furniture, the seating group reads as one room within the room. When in doubt between two sizes, go up.
Living rooms
For a standard sofa-and-two-chairs arrangement, an 8' x 10' is the workhorse — front legs of everything on the rug, about 18 inches of floor showing at the walls. Big open-plan rooms want a 9' x 12' or larger so the seating zone holds its own. A 5' x 8' in front of a full-size sofa is the floating-furniture look we're trying to avoid — save that size for reading corners and bedroom sides.
Bedrooms
The rug's job is a soft landing on both sides of the bed. For a queen, an 8' x 10' placed under the bottom two-thirds of the bed leaves about two feet of rug on each side. For a king, go 9' x 12'. Runner on one side only? That works in narrow rooms — 2'6" x 8' beside the bed.
Dining rooms
Chairs should stay on the rug even when pulled out. Measure your table and add 24–30 inches on every side. Most 6-seat tables land on an 8' x 10'; a round table wants a round rug.
Runners, entries and kitchens
Hallways want 4–5 inches of floor showing on each side of a runner. In an entry, a 4' x 6' or a round rug softens the first step inside. Kitchens love a runner in front of the sink — it's the cheapest way to make a kitchen feel decorated.
